CATHARSIS

Personal Project

CATHARSIS is a queer-catholic-magical-realism short film. Recently-outed Elizabeth and her guardian angel, Gabrièl set out on a cross country road trip seeking answers from the divine and forsaken.

Does kissing an angel forsake them of their divine rank, does it damn you, or does it make you holy instead? Do you care either way?

Recently-outed Elizabeth and her guardian angel Gabrièl set out on a cross country road trip seeking out answers from the divine and the forsaken.

After being accidentally outed to a less than enthusiastic family, Elizabeth seeks answers about the nature of existence, family, love and God in the face of the cruelty of condemnation. After receiving advice from a strange priest and her newly visible guardian angel- Elizabeth leaves home takes off on a cross country road trip in search of the one person who might offer her insight- her long lost gay cousin who moved out west to San Luz five years ago.
Meanwhile- her guardian angel Gabrièl is tasked with trying to restore Elizabeth’s faith while on this journey. However Gabrièl harbors her own secret motivation and risks being forsaken if she lets this feeling be known.

As southern gothic gives way to southwestern liminality and 10pm gives way to 1am- Elizabeth and Gabrièl encounter figures of faith and and servants of the devil. Seraphim hang out at gas stations. Neon crosses hang silent in pitch black nights along lonely highways.

Mary owns a 24/7 diner where no one is turned away. Adam runs a bar where Lilith and Eve work and the Devil is a regular.
Jesus is gone, Judas is waiting in the desert for a lover that will never come home.
